My goodness, Sun Wukong was trapped under the Five Elements Mountain lah!! In Forbidden Kingdom, it’s depicted that he turned to stone and trapped within a fortress which of course is an embellishment and not in accordance to the myth.

I find this movie pretty entertaining because of some easter eggs that were present:

1. Jackie reprised quite a number of his roles in this show from his old classics like Drunken Fist & Snake in Eagle’s Shadow in his fight scenes.

2. Jet Li’s role as a monk is reminiscent of the time when he first started out before his big break in Once Upon a Time in China. Most of his earlier works involved him playing the role of a Shaolin monk.

3. Forbidden Kingdowm made a reference to another HK movie: Bride with White Hair, starring Brigitte Lin & the late Leslie Cheung. In the former movie, Brigitte was a pugilist who seeks vengeance on ALL men because one had dumped her, and that ordeal consequently turned her hair white too, hence the title. Li Bing Bing now filled her shoes in this movie.

4. The peach harvest banquet as depicted where Wukong gate crashed was also in accordance to the myth though there was no mention of the Jade Warlord in the myth. Incidentally, this antic was also one of the chief “causes” of Wukong being trapped under the Five Elements Mountain.

5. No prizes for a correct guess of who the actors playing the roles of the monkey god and the chinese antique shopowner are.
